Sailing Sensation Scarlett Hadley

Scarlett Hadley, a 16-year-old sailing prodigy from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is not just navigating the waves; she’s making waves on the world stage. Her journey from borrowed boats to international competitions is a testament to her passion, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her local community.

Setting Sail with Vincy Sailing

Seven years ago, Scarlett embarked on her sailing odyssey, starting with borrowed boats and fuelled by her love for the sea. Thanks to the backing of local entrepreneur Kelly Glass, Vincy Sailing Club was born, providing Scarlett with the platform to hone her skills and embark on a journey that would lead her far beyond the local waters.

A Trailblazing Journey

Scarlett’s competitive spirit shone through in the 2018 Bequia Junior Regatta, where she clinched the 3rd position overall and 1st female. This marked the beginning of her ascent in the world of competitive sailing.

Rising Above Challenges

Amid the challenges posed by the pandemic, Scarlett’s dedication caught the attention of the SVG Sailing Association. Selected for the World Sailing Emerging Nations Programme, Scarlett engaged in online coaching sessions with renowned coach Rob Holden and received on-water training from coaches Jenny Trumble and Martin Ince.

PanAm Games Triumph

In 2023, Scarlett’s commitment paid off when she secured a coveted spot at the PanAm Games Santiago 2023. Mentored by Anna Tunnicliffe, a USA Olympic Gold Medallist, Scarlett not only embraced the experience but also formed lasting bonds with champions like Sarah Douglas and Erika Reineke. Despite her age, Scarlett held her own in the fiercely competitive field.

Balancing Act

Competitive sailing demands mental and physical fortitude, and Scarlett rises to the challenge. Working with coach Lindon James from Be Fit Movement SVG, Scarlett’s remarkable work ethic and dedication have led to significant improvements in her strength and conditioning.

Giving Back to Vincy

Beyond her own pursuits, Scarlett dedicates her time to teaching Vincy kids to sail. By imparting skills and opening doors to opportunities in the yachting industry, she is a beacon of inspiration for the youth of her community.

Scarlett Hadley’s story is more than a sailing success; it’s a narrative of resilience, mentorship and community support. As she continues to set sail towards new horizons, Scarlett’s journey inspires us to dream big, work hard, and give back to those who aspire to follow in her wake.
